I am based in a small town, population of somewhere near 500 people. Our office is small and we have 10 full time medics. Its the type of town that, i would say that everybody knows everybody, but I don't know everybody. I should say its the type of town where everybody knows me. Lets face it, i drive around in a 8 foot tall, $120,000 billboard with flashing red lights.
If somebody has not had the pleasure of riding around in my billboard with me, they may not know my name, but they can at least pin me down to "that feller what drives around in the ambliance".
Small town life is actually a new concept to me. I Grew up in a major city but when i finished paramedic school i went where the jobs were. In the country. I loved it. However up until six months ago i was able to live relatively anonymously. I bounced around from one spot to another, never really setting up any substantial
I could carry on forever on the pros and cons of living in a small town, and i probably will, just not right now.
Aside from working full-time on the ambulance, i am also a volunteer firefighter. Its a completely seperate animal from EMS around here. Paramedics-paid, volunteer firefighters-not paid. Seems simple doesnt it? I enjoy the brotherhood of the fire department. For the most part it is just a great bunch of guys and girls (sorry...girl...singular) who work really well together towards a common goal. In this case the common goal would be putting the wet stuff on the red stuff. Most of my best friendships are friendships i have developed through the fire department.
So...paramedic...firefighter...sounds like plenty right?? I guess not for me. I am also a flight medic. For some reason, probably the money, i decided last year to make a habbit of availing my services as a paramedic to a company who provides air ambulance coverage in the furthest regions of the arctic. The arctic is cold, and white, and i have to go back soon and miss the rest of the summer. Im not quite sure how i feel about that presently.
And what do I do with all my time off?? I dont...what little time i have off i spend working on my house, playing with my dog and hanging out with my friends...which is what im going to do now.
